CLAY

LOS MOTEADOS

The ceramic skin with its textures, colors and birthmarks, is full of stories.

Los Moteados is a low-fired ceramic series that was handcrafted in the Mixes District of the Sierra Norte of   Oaxaca where pottery is part of the cultural and cosmogonic manifestation. The natural Mixes clay stands out for its elegant coral-orange look. It bears accidental scars or birthmarks originating during the formation process or during firing. The most striking is the mottling: the black charcoal-like stains on the surface where the clay came into contact with wood or smoke or the warm coloration created by the flow of the flame on the surface.

The plate's surface is raw but carved with a gemstone to polish and compress the clay to gain a greater strength and to seal the pores. The earthenware, despite its glazing technique that reduces porosity, still has a higher water absorption rate compared to stoneware due to its natural properties. This makes it more susceptible to stains. However, with careful use, an appreciation for its distinctive character and authentic craftsmanship, it becomes indispensable for daily use.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: After purchase, follow these care instructions only once: Boil a liter of water with a handful of salt or lime, then pour it into a large container. Add room temperature water. Submerge the clay pieces, ensuring all pieces are covered. Let them rest overnight, then wash them like any other dishes the next day. When in use, wash the clay directly afterward. Avoid using steak knives. Apply organic coconut oil occasionally to prevent stains and maintain a natural patina.
